Northern ministers in President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet have intensified efforts to counter growing criticism from opposition figures, following directives from the Presidency to defend the administration.

According to a published report at the weekend, ministers and senior officeholders are now vocal in defending the administration following directives from the Presidency.

The Tinubu administration faces mounting attacks from political figures, including ex-governors and opposition leaders. Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, condemned former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi’s remarks against Tinubu, calling them reckless. He also dismissed the Northern Elders Forum’s (NEF) regret over supporting Tinubu in 2023, labeling the group a political burden.

The feud between ex-Kaduna governor Nasir el-Rufa’i and National Security Adviser, (NSA) Nuhu Ribaɗu also underscores the tensions. El-Rufa’i accused Ribaɗu of hypocrisy over past corruption allegations against Tinubu, prompting Ribaɗu to demand a public apology.

Foreign Affairs Minister, Yusuf Tuggar also clashed with Bauchi Governor Bala Mohammed, refuting claims that Tinubu had failed on his promises, and accusing Mohammed of mismanaging increased federal allocations.

A government insider confirmed that northern ministers had been instructed to counter opposition forces ahead of the 2027 election. According to sources, political figures from the North-West, including el-Rufa’i and ex-Senator Wammako, are pushing against Tinubu’s second-term bid, while North-East leaders, including Vice-President Kashim Shettima, and ministers like Ali Pate, are positioning for the presidency post-2027.

Tinubu has bolstered his support with strategic appointments and projects, such as a new university in Kaduna-South and key positions for allies like ex-Katsina governor, Aminu Bello Masari.

The Presidency is also working to weaken Governor Bala Mohammed, who has fallen out with his political backers. The APC is reportedly considering fielding ministers Ali Pate and Yusuf Tuggar for the Bauchi governorship in 2027.

Minister of Environment, Balarabe Lawal dismissed Tinubu’s critics as blackmailers, asserting that northern elites do not speak for the region. APC North-West Publicity Secretary, Musa Mada denied that ministers were acting under orders, insisting they were setting the record straight.

Presidential aide, Bayo Onanuga echoed this, stating that ministers were simply defending the administration against misinformation.

With opposition voices growing louder, Tinubu’s northern allies appear determined to secure his 2027 bid while navigating internal power struggles for the post-Tinubu era.
